How Much Does the Shingles Vaccine Cost in the UK?
August 12, 2026

The shingles vaccine costs £220 per dose at our West Ealing clinic, and the full two-dose course is £440. That’s the entire answer to the headline question, published rather than quoted after an enquiry form. The rest of this guide is the context: how that compares across the UK, what to check when clinics look cheaper than they are, and how to think about whether it’s worth it. Our complete guide to the private shingles vaccine covers the vaccine itself in full.
The short version
- £220 per dose at our clinic, £440 for the full two-dose course.
- UK private clinics typically charge between £200 and £250 per dose.
- Always compare the course price, not the per-dose price. Everyone needs two doses.
- The NHS vaccine is free if you’re in an eligible group.
- Spread over ten years of trial-documented protection, the course works out at £44 a year.
What you’ll pay at our clinic
Shingrix, the vaccine we hold and the one used across the UK, is a course of two doses given two months apart. Each dose is £220. The full course is £440, paid per dose as you have it rather than upfront.
Two doses isn’t a sales structure, it’s how the vaccine works. The clinical trial results, 97% fewer shingles cases in adults 50 and over, were measured after both doses, and the second one is what secures long-lasting protection. A single dose gives you something, but not the thing the numbers describe. If you’re going to spend money on this vaccine at all, budget for the course.
Every shingles vaccine price you see is really a two-dose price in disguise. A clinic advertising £215 per dose is a £430 course. Compare at the course level and the market gets much easier to read.
How prices compare across the UK
Private shingles vaccination in the UK generally costs between £200 and £250 per dose, which puts a completed course between £400 and £500. London prices tend towards the upper half of that range. Our £220 per dose sits below the typical London figure.
When you compare clinics, look past the headline number. Check whether the price includes the appointment itself or lists a consultation fee separately, whether both doses are the same price, and whether the clinic actually holds stock or orders on demand. A cheaper dose that comes with a booking fee attached is not cheaper.
One comparison matters more than any of the private ones: the NHS vaccine is free if you’re in an eligible group. Eligibility runs on cohort rules that confuse almost everyone, and we’ve explained them in plain terms in our guide to NHS shingles vaccine eligibility. If you qualify, use that route. The private market exists for the millions of people who don’t.
Why the shingles vaccine costs more than a flu jab
Fair question, and the answer is in the technology. Shingrix is a recombinant vaccine paired with a purpose-built adjuvant, a design that took decades to develop and that produces an immune response strong enough to protect people in their seventies and eighties, the very group most vaccines struggle to protect. It’s among the more expensive adult vaccines at trade level before any clinic touches it, and it needs an unbroken cold chain from factory to arm.
That’s what you’re paying for: not the five minutes in the chair, but one of the most effective adult vaccines ever brought to market. The private shingles vaccine service we run is priced to reflect the vaccine’s cost, not to extract what the postcode will bear.
Is it worth £440?
We can’t answer that for you, but we can lay out the trade. About one in four people will get shingles in their lifetime, and the odds climb from your fifties. There’s no cure. An episode means a painful, blistering rash for a week or more, several weeks below par, and a real chance of nerve pain that outlasts the rash by months. The vaccine reduced all of that by 90% or more in trials, and follow-up data shows protection lasting at least ten years with no booster currently recommended.
Put £440 against ten years and it’s £44 a year. Put it against a single month of post-herpetic neuralgia and most people stop doing the arithmetic. That said, the honest comparison also includes waiting: if your NHS invitation is due next year, waiting costs nothing but time, and the eligibility guide linked above will tell you where you stand.
The cost question and the eligibility question are the same question. Find out whether the NHS will vaccinate you free and when, then decide whether £440 is worth not waiting. For everyone outside the NHS cohorts, the private course is simply the price of being protected at all.
Booking
There’s no referral needed and nothing to arrange before you come in. Book the appointment, we’ll assess you, and if the vaccine is right for you the first dose happens then and there, with the second booked for two months later.

Questions we’re asked most about the cost
Do I pay for both doses at once?
No, you pay per dose at each appointment. £220 at the first, £220 at the second two months later.
Is the second dose the same price?
Yes. Both doses are £220. The same item is the same price everywhere at our clinic.
Why do some clinics advertise very different prices?
The UK range is fairly narrow, £200 to £250 per dose. Bigger apparent differences usually come from consultation or booking fees around the vaccine, or from a headline that’s per dose where you assumed a course. Compare completed-course totals.
Can I get the shingles vaccine free instead?
If you’re in an eligible NHS group, yes, through your GP surgery. The main eligible groups are people who turned 65 on or after 1 September 2023, people aged 70 to 79, and adults with severely weakened immune systems. If that might be you, check before paying privately.
Does private health insurance cover it?
Some plans contribute towards vaccinations and some don’t. It’s worth a call to your insurer before you book, and we can provide a receipt either way.
I’m over 80, do I pay the same?
Yes, £220 per dose privately with no upper age limit. NHS eligibility ends at the 80th birthday, which catches many people out.
Is a cheaper single dose worth anything?
Some protection, yes, but the trial figures everyone quotes are two-dose figures. We don’t recommend planning around one dose, and we’d say the same if we charged double.
